Circa 1984. Nike took out full front page ads in mags like Runner's World promoting this new shoe. The Sock Racer was like something no one had seen before. It had a lot of cushioning and little support. The Sock Racer demonstrated to the world that Nike was truly an innovative company. A couple elite marathoners experimented with the shoe - I remember seeing pics of Norway's Ingrid Christiansen competing in them. However, the Sock Racers were really readily adopted by the triathlon crowd as it was comfortable and most importantly quick to put on in one's transition between the bike and run segments of a race.
